SOC 2 audit cost: what the CPA firm charges, and why quotes vary
SOC 2 audit cost means the fee paid to the licensed CPA firm for the examination itself. So it sits apart from preparation, tools and remediation, which are budgeted separately.
- Preparation, not the examination
- A licensed CPA firm signs the report
- Plain-English guidance
Typical SOC 2 audit cost ranges
Fees depend mainly on report type and scope. Also, firm size changes the price for the same work.
| Report | Typical CPA firm fee |
|---|---|
| Type I examination | $5,000 to $30,000 |
| Type II examination | $10,000 to $70,000 |
Why SOC 2 audit cost varies by firm
The same company with the same scope might hear very different numbers. For example, roughly $15,000 from a boutique firm, $35,000 from a mid-tier firm and $90,000 from one of the Big Four.
Brand matters to some buyers. However, every licensed CPA firm issues the same type of report.

What drives SOC 2 audit cost up
Scope is the biggest lever. Therefore define it carefully before requesting quotes.
- More Trust Services Criteria beyond Security
- More systems, locations or teams in scope
- A Type II instead of a Type I
- Messy evidence that takes longer to test
Warning signs in a low quote
A quote of $3,000 to $5,000 for a full examination is a warning sign. Because there are not enough hours in it to test properly, buyers may question the report.
In addition, ask what testing approach the firm uses. A credible firm explains its sampling plainly.
The full first-year budget
Audit fees are only part of the cost. Preparation and remediation from us is a fixed fee of $5,000 to $40,000, paid separately from the CPA firm. We are not a CPA firm, so the examination fee always goes to the licensed firm. Background is on the AICPA guidance on SOC 2 page.
Also ask each firm what is included. For example, some quotes include readiness meetings or a bridge letter, while others charge for them separately. So compare like with like before choosing. In addition, ask how the fee changes in year two, because recurring Type II examinations often cost less once the system is understood.
